Our Story
The Land Remembers. So Must We.
Long before borders and maps, the San and Khoi peoples walked the southern tip of Africa in harmony with land, animals, and stars. They are not just part of history—they are its beginning.
Hunter-gatherers, stargazers, painters of stone and bone, the San and Khoi carry a living archive of ecological wisdom and spiritual knowledge.
But colonization, land dispossession, and cultural erasure pushed this knowledge to the edges of survival.
Amidst this silence rose a voice: Vetkat Regopstaan Kruiper. A San man born of this soil, Vetkat saw visions in dreams, stars, and desert tracks. With nothing but ink and paper, he drew:
Sacred animals—lion, meerkat, gemsbok
Symbolic geometry—spiritual maps, ancestral cycles
Human figures—half-remembered and deeply felt
By his side was Belinda Kruiper, a writer, activist, and soul witness. Belinda documented Vetkat’s work, the culture around it, and the spiritual messages carried in every drawing, dance, and story shared around the fire.
Their partnership became the seed of the Foundation. Their vision: preservation, education, remembrance.
After Vetkat’s passing, Belinda, together with elders and supporters, formalized the Vetkat Art Foundation as a space of dignity—for healing, sharing, and passing on indigenous knowledge.
Since its formation, the Foundation has:
Hosted exhibitions from Cape Town to Europe
Published collections of art, poems, and oral histories
Supported San youth through education and storytelling programs
Curated tours and pilgrimages to connect visitors with sacred sites and living culture
